Ash Math

I've been working hard on multiplication for math. I like math because there are lots of different ways to do math. My favorite is multiplication because there's lots of ways to write it out. I have my test tomorrow. I'm on chapter six in my 4th grade math book.  I am looking forward to my test because I did pretty good on my review.

Templeton's Story

Templeton's Story

One morning Templeton the rat woke up at a mysterious farm.  He was in the barn and he had no idea how he got there.  "Where am I," he asked the sheep.  "You are at Zuckerman's farm," replied the sheep.  "How did I get here?" asked Templeton.  "How should I know, I was asleep," said the sheep.  " I was awake," said a voice.  "Where are you and do you know how I got here," asked Templeton.  "I'm in the corner of the barn door, and last night a crow flew in to the barn wall and dropped something," said the voice. "That something was you," "The only thing I remember doing is falling asleep in my junkyard," said Templeton.  "The crow must have swept you up in your sleep," said the voice.  "Well I might as well live here," said Templeton.  "By the way, my name is Templeton," said the rat.  "My name is Charlotte," said the voice from the corner.  "Charlotte, do you know where I could get some junk, I want my home to be as much like my old one as possible," said Templeton.  "There is a junk yard about a mile down the road that you could pick some stuff up from," replied Charlotte. "But if you want junk in your house, our house has to be under ground," "That's fine," said Templeton.  "I like the dark,"

So Templeton set to work.  He dug tunnels, got junk, and made friends and enemies at the barn.  A few weeks after he moved in, they got a new friend to the barn. Wilbur the pig.

When Wilbur first arrived, Templeton tried to stay hidden.  The only thing he liked about pigs was their slop.  One day Wilbur go loose.  They chased him everywhere.  Finally Mr. Zuckerman got his attention with a bucket of slop.  Templeton decided that if he talked to the pig and became friends with him he might share his slop.  "Hey," said Templeton.  "Who's there," asked Wilbur with a mouth full of slop.  "It's me Templeton the rat," he replied. "Will you share your slop with me?"  "Sure, I'll save you a few noodles," said Wilbur.

One day Templeton came out of his hole.  The whole barn was up and talking about Wilbur.  They were saying how Wilbur would die this winter.  Wilbur was very scared.  Charlotte had become Wilbur's friend and she wanted to help him.  So Templeton spoke up. "Charlotte you could write words in your web that describe the pig, so people will love him,"  "That's a great idea Templeton, but how will I know how to spell the words?" replied Charlotte.  "I will go to the junk yard and pick up some magazine clippings so you can copy them," said Templeton.  "That would be fantastic," said Charlotte.  So he set off to the junk yard.  He searched everywhere until he found the words "Some Pig".  When he got back Wilbur was asleep.  "Here you go," he said as he handed the magazine to Charlotte.  "Thank you Templeton, what does it say," asked Charlotte.  "It says "Some Pig," replied Templeton.  Then he scampered back into his hole and fell asleep.  When he came out the next morning there where tons of people taking pictures of the web and Wilbur.  Wilbur couldn't die this winter.  He was famous!

The next few weeks Templeton went to the junk yard and found Charlotte words like Terrific, and Radiant. Charlotte spun the words in her web and every time news crews and people from everywhere would come see.

The next day Mr. Zuckerman said he wanted to enter Wilbur in the fair.  He had his son Lurvy build a green crate that said Zuckerman's famous pig.  "The fair is a rats dream," said Templeton.  "Can I come with you Wilbur," "Of course Templeton," replied Wilbur.  "You have to come too Charlotte," said Wilbur.  "I can't Wilbur, I am going to have my babies soon," replied Charlotte.  "Please," begged Wilbur.  "I need you to write more words in your web,"  "OK, said Charlotte. So her and Templeton climbed into Wilbur's crate.  Templeton then fell asleep and dreamed about eating all he could eat at the fair.

When they go to the fair they unloaded Wilbur, Charlotte climbed into the corner and Templeton went to search for food.  He ran all over.  There were 65 garbage cans and he stuffed himself.  He ate nachos, hamburgers, hot dogs, and deserts.  This would keep him fed for at least a week.  When he got back to Wilbur's pen he had gained 6 pounds.  While he was out he found Charlotte the word "humble" in one of the garbage cans.  "Will this work?" he asked.  "Perfectly," replied Charlotte.

When everyone woke up the next morning they found out that a different pig had won the blue ribbon, but then Zuckerman saw the web.  He called the owner of the fair and they awarded a medal to Wilbur.  Then Templeton went food searching again, and you can imagine how fat he was then.

When Templeton got to Wilbur's pen Wilbur looked sad. "What's the matter," asked Templeton.  "Charlotte is going to die," said Wilbur. "Why?" asked Templeton.  "Because after she has her egg sack she will get sick and die," replied Wilbur sadly.  "Could you carry her eggs back to Zuckerman's barn so we will have her kids there, I'll give you first choice on my slop everyday," said Wilbur.  "I guess I could do that," said Templeton.  He wanted to help Charlotte and Wilbur because they were his only friends.

So he carried the egg sack back to Zuckerman's barn, and he and Wilbur had lots of new spider friends. He lived happily ever after eating Wilbur's slop.

Spiders

We have been learning about spiders in science.Spiders are often thought of as insects but they are not. Spiders are called arachnids. Spiders have 8 legs and 2 main body parts. The body parts  are called the cephalothorax and the abdomen .Spiders do not have wings or antennas.  It is fun learning about spiders.

This is a picture that I drew today of a black widow spider.

The Mystery of the Stolen Earrings

The Wonderful Adventures of Alle Sleinad and Allyson Nworb

One day Alle Sleinad and her best friend Allyson Nworb (the local New York spies known for their amazing detective work) were sitting in their living room when they got a call. "Alle, Allyson!" said a frantic voice.  "What do you need?" asked Alle.  "Someone stolen the trillion dollar earrings from my museum in New York!" the frantic voice was Mailliw Erev, the owner of the museum.  "We will come right away!" said Alle.  "Who was that?" asked Allyson.  "That was Mailliw Erev, the trillion dollar earrings have been stolen from his museum, he called us to come investigate," replied Alle.  "Well lets go then," said Allyson.

When they got to the museum Mailliw explained what happened.  "The night patrolman said he didn't even hear a crash, when he made his first loop around the museum they were there when he made his second loop they were gone.  He was surprised and scared when he called me, he was also surprised he didn't take the matching necklace," said Mailliw.

"We will investigate," said Alle.  "Do you mind not opening the museum," said Allyson.  " That's fine, just give me a call if you need anything," replied Mailliw.  So Alle and Allyson started looking all over the museum for clues.

"Allyson!" Alle called. "What?" asked Allyson.  "The box that the earrings were in isn't broken, it looks like the person who that stole them had a key to the box," said Alle.  "That's crazy, the only person that could have the keys is the owner of the museum, and that's Mailliw!" exclaimed Allyson.  "We have to find evidence before we accuse him though," said Alle.  So they kept searching.  "Alle, look what I found. It's a paper saying "ecalkcen gnichctam eht teg ot uoy deen I", said Allyson.  "Allyson, it's backwards, it really says "I need you to get the matching necklace" someone is coming for the matching necklace tonight," said Alle.  "We could secretly stay the night at the museum, and follow the thief home to find out who he is, I'll call Mailliw," said Allyson.  "That's a great idea but we can't call Mailliw, he's a suspect remember," replied Alle.  "Good point," said Allyson.

So Alle and Allyson stayed the night watching and waiting for the thief.  Suddenly they saw someone, but he had a mask on.  They were right he pulled out some keys and unlocked the box with the necklace in it.  After he took it Alle and Allyson snuck after him.  They jumped in the bed of his truck and followed him to the abandoned potato cellar.

"Let's go in after him," said Allyson.  So they carefully snuck behind him and hid behind a barrel when they got inside.  "I got the necklace," said the thief.  "Good, good," said a voice from the dark.  Then a woman stepped out wearing the earrings.  "Oh Mailliw, you are a great henchman, and no one will know you stole the earrings because you hired those spies, we will never be found out," said the woman.  "I knew it was Mailliw!" said Alle in a whisper.  "Now we just have to figure out who that woman is," said Allyson.  "Oh Azile Ecarg, you are a genius," said Mailliw.  "Well that was easy," said Allyson.  "Time to call the authorities," said Alle.  "Let's call them, wait five minutes and jump out at Azile and Mailliw so the police will be there a few seconds after we catch them," said Allyson.  "Great plan," said Alle.

So they called the police, explained everything and waited five minutes. "On the count of three we will jump out," said Alle.  "One, Two, Three!" they yelled.  "Ah hah, Mailliw Erev, and Azile Ecarg, we have caught you and the police are on their way," said Alle.  "Hand over the earrings and necklace now," said Allyson.  "Do you think we're dumb? We still have at least five minutes before the police get here," said Azile.  "Yeah," said Mailliw trying to act important.  "Let's run," said Azile.  "Yeah," said Mailliw again.  "Will you stop that!" snapped Azile.

When they got outside the police were already there, just as Alle, and Allyson had planned.  Mailliw and Azile were taken to jail and the earrings and necklace were returned to the museum.  Alle and Allyson took Mailliw's place as owner of the museum, and all was as it should be.  Or was it?

Acid Rain

Acid Rain

Acid rain is rainfall that is turned to acid because of pollution in the air. It can cause harm to our
environment, mostly to forests and lakes.  The main cause of acid rain is the burning of coal and other fossil fuels.  All the gasses join together and turn the atmospheric water into acids.

The effects of acid rain are the lakes and streams can have acid in them that will kill the plants and animals , it can damage the trees at high elevations and it can accelerate  the decay of building materials and paints.  Including one of a kind buildings, statues, and sculptures.

Some things that we can do to help stop acid rain are....We can try to use cars less often. You could car pool, walk or ride bikes. Try to save electricity by turning off lights, or the T.V. and, using things that use less energy such as LED lights.

Bees

This week in Science we are learning about bees. I'm excited to learn about them because I want to learn about their stingers, their wings, how they make honey, and other interesting facts.

We listened to a talk by Elder M. Russell Ballard about bees. His father owned a lot of bees and their hives. It was very interesting. A bee only makes 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in it's life, but every bee's small part is very important to the hive.

Endangered Animals

The Aye-Aye

The Aye-Aye has dark brown or black hair.  It has a bushy tail that is bigger than it's body.  The Aye-Aye has big eyes, slender fingers, large ears, and long claws.

The Aye-Aye lives in Madagascar.  They usually live in Rainforests.

Aye-Aye's eat coconuts, bugs, and fruit.

Aye- Ayes are endangered because they were thought to bring bad luck.  So if someone saw the Aye-Aye they would kill it on the spot.

The Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle is 31-37 inches tall.  They could have up to a 7 foot wing span.

The male Bald Eagle has a white head with a dark body and tail.  They have a curved yellow bill, and yellow feet.  The female Bald Eagle is the same but it is slightly larger.

The Bald Eagle eats fish, carrion, and birds. (Mostly ducks).

The Bald Eagle's nest is usually on a massive platform or tree.  They return to the same nest every year.  They also add to their nests every year.

The Bald Eagle is endangered because of DDT poisoning and illegal killing.  The Bald Eagle is now protected by the United States.

The Ocelot

Ocelots are twice the size of an average house cat.  They have pointed fangs, and a sleek pretty coat.  They also have keen sight.

Ocelots eat rabbits, rodents, iguanas, fish , and frogs.

Ocelots live in South American Rainforests.  They also live in bush lands as far north as Texas.

The Ocelot is endangered because their beautiful fur has made them a hunting target.

My Reading Books!

For Reading and Social Studies I am reading these books
This book is called From the Mixed Up Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.  It is about two kids that run away from home because they don't like their chores.  They go to New York and live in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It is exciting and fun to read.
This book is called the Diary of Anne Frank.  I am reading this book because I was learning about WW2 in Social Studies.  This book is about a Jewish girl that lives in Germany during WW2.  Her family is trying to escape the Nazi's because they want to take her sister to a concentration camp.  So far I have read to where they have gone into hiding.  It is interesting to see how they lived and how they hid from the Nazi's.

Moth and Butterfly

This is a picture of my science because we have been learning about butterflies and moths. Some differences are: moths have hair and butterflies don't have hair, Moths fly at night, butterflies fly at day time. butterflies rest with their wings up and moths rest with their wings down.
I like my Science because it's fun. When the weather is warmer than 45 degrees and cooler than 85 degrees, we are going to get some caterpillars and watch them turn into butterflies. I think this will be fun to watch.

Life of the Jews in WW2

Life of the Jews in WW2

The  persecution of the Jews started in Germany in 1933.  In 1933 about 522,000 Jews lived in Germany.  About 304,000 Jews then immigrated because of the persecution.  The persecution then got worse and worse.

In 1941 there was a decree that prohibited the Jews from using pretty much everything in the public. For example, they couldn't go to school, they didn't have jobs, and they couldn't even get married. The Jews also had to live in designated places known as "Jewish Houses".  Germans required  any Jews fit for work to do forced labor.  Then Adolf Hitler made the decision to exterminate the Jews.

Extermination Camps started in 1943.  Jews were forced to go to extermination camps (also known as concentration camps).  Hitler made them do hard and often useless chores.  The work days were usually 12-14 hours long.  Some examples of the chores are, to move heavy sandbags from one place to another, to carry big stones, to dig a trench, or to bore a tunnel.  They had to do these things as fast as possible and they were being beaten as they worked.

Sometimes they would work the Jews to death at the extermination camps.  They would have mass killing in gas chambers or ovens.  About 3,000,000 Jews were killed by the Nazis.

My opinion paper

Why I love Christmas

I think Christmas is the best holiday because we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.  Some of my favorite things to do around Christmas time are sing Christmas songs, Go to my Grandma and Grandpa's house, and go sledding.  My favorite Christmas song is Jingle Bell Rock.  I like going to my Grandma and Grandpas house because we ride horses, and they have a big hill that we go sledding on.

Some people might not like Christmas because they might not like the cold or sledding.  It might not snow where people live and they might not like it hot during the winter.  Some people don't believe in Jesus so that is why some people don't celebrate Christmas.  Some people celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa instead.  Also people might not like to sing Christmas songs.

I like Christmas more than any holiday because it has deep meaning. A quote I love from "Duck the Halls, a Robertson family Christmas" o is, "Why I love Christmas?, it's a special time of year. Why I love Christmas?, bringing hope and lots of cheer. The Child that was born on that morn, brought the gift of salvation to us. That' s why I love Christmas."

Labor Unions

Labor Unions

Labor Unions started in 1955.  A Labor Union is an organized group of workers that have certain benefits.  Labor Unions are formed to lengthen the companies rights, or interests.

Some examples of major Labor Unions then are, The American Federation of Labor (AFL) and Congress of  Industrial Organization (CIO).  Some examples of Labor Unions today are, Farm Workers, Pilots, Actors, Firemen, Warehouse, Hotels, Food, and Construction.

Some benefits that unionized workers have are, that they get extra vacation time, they get more plentiful health benefits, and they are more likely to get paid leave.

My opinion on Labor Unions is that they started good and helped people, but now the government has to much interference.  Some examples of this that my dad shared are, "they make huge political donations to the party that will give them what they want and they threaten to withhold their support to political candidates unless they will further their agendas" My dad adds,  "to belong to a union people have to pay union dues, these used to go to help the workers and now they are mostly to fund the political machine and make the union bosses wealthy".
