My WW1 book

For my Reading this week it said to read a Nonfiction book so I chose to read a book about World War 1 because I was studying it in Social Studies.  I'm reading a book called The War To End All Wars.

One of the things I thought was interesting was, On the first Christmas during WW1 the soldiers on both sides came out of the trenches, and gave each other gifts.  Some of the gifts were food and cigars.  Then they built a snow man, and not a single bullet was fired that day.  Sadly the generals found out and the soldiers were not able to do this the other three years of the war.

Here is a picture of the snow man they made.

My WW1 map

For Social Studies I made a map of the allied powers, the central powers, and the neutral countries during WW1 (World War One).  The allied powers are white, the central powers are red, and the neutral countries are gray.

Family Traditions

                                    Family Traditions

In my family we have several family traditions. Some of my favorites traditions are that we have a Christmas tree, we go on vacation instead of Christmas presents, we celebrate birthdays every year, we go to my Grandma Daniels' house usually for Thanksgiving, and we go on back to school dates.

Some Christmas vacations that we've had are that we went to Las Vegas,  and we went to Disney Land. My parents surprised us when we went to Disney Land. I was so excited. My favorite rides were California Scream'n, and the Tower of Terror. My favorite things in Las Vegas were Excalibur and Circus Circus. We saw a jousting show at Excalibur, and Circus Circus is a place with a bunch of rides and roller coasters.

For my birthday one year, I went on a shopping spree. I went to a store to get some shoes and I went to Aeropostale. I also went to my favorite restaurant, Butter Burrs.

One Thanksgiving my Grandma Daniels made nine pies some of the pies were pumpkin, berry, chocolate and, pecan. My favorites are chocolate and berry. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.

On my back to school date this year, Pocatello was flooded. We also saw a car crash. I went to Butter Burrs and I got a bunch of cute new clothes.

Family Traditions are important so we can make special memories and spend time with family. I love my family traditions and I will want to continue them with my kids.

The howl and the growl

                     The howl and the growl

When I was  hiking in the mountains, I heard a howl, it scared me, it sounded fowl .

Luckily I had a gun. I started to run,  but I ran into the howl. It was an owl.

It was really cold, so I followed the owl, being bold .

It led me to a cave close by, in the sky .I heard a growl, it was scary .I wanted to be merry.

I heard  it  again .I went into the cave and the owl had a scowl because the owl was working for the growl!

 I got eaten and beaten.

A wolf and an owl

                                      A wolf and an owl

I heard an owl, at night.

It had a fight,

with a kite,

on a dark night .

I heard a howl.

 I flew around

to find the sound.

down town.

 I found the sound

 It was a wolf.

 I tried  to fly away.

I needed somewhere to stay.

 I went to my house.

so I would be okay.

I was as quiet as a mouse.

The wolf didn't find me
I was up in a tree.

Ruth the Hoolabadina

Ruth the Hoolabadina

One day I went downstairs to get a spaghetti sauce can for dinner.  When I walked passed the furnace I heard a strange noise.  It sounded like  thumping  feet.  "What is that?" I exclaimed.  I slowly pulled out the furnace filter and looked inside.  Inside there was a little teddy bear/elephant creature that stood about 5 inches tall.  "Hello," it said. "My name is Ruth the Hoolabadina,"

"Hi," I said.  "Where did you come from?"  "I came from the planet E3CPO," said Ruth.  "Oh," I said. " Do you want to come upstairs? You can stay in my room."  "That sounds fantastic," replied Ruth.  So I grabbed the spaghetti can and took Ruth upstairs.

"So, Ruth, why did you come to Earth?" I asked.  "Is that where I am?, well E3CPO is at war so my parents sent me here in a special space ship, so I would be safe," she replied.  "Will you ever go back?"  I asked.  "I can go back in three days, which is three years in E3CPO time," she said.  "How do you get back?" I asked.  "You just have to press the return button on my space ship," she replied.  "Where is your space ship?" I asked.  "It's in that dark room that you found me in," she said.  So we went downstairs and found her space ship.

"Well," I said.  Now all we have to do wait three days. What do you want to do?"  Just then Mom called, "Ella, it's time to eat dinner!"  "Sorry, I have to go eat dinner, I will bring you a few noodles," I said.  After dinner we were going to watch Duck Dynasty.  "Ruth," I said. "We are going to watch a movie. Do you want to come? We can sit on the back couch so no one will see you."  "What is a moovee? " asked Ruth.  "Um, it's where we watch people on a screen," I replied.  "Sounds fun," said Ruth.

So we went and watched the movie.  Ruth was in awe.  After the movie we went to bed.  I made Ruth a bed out of a basket.  She slept in my closet so no one would see her.

The next day we went on a walk by the river.  I carried Ruth in my coat pocket.  Then we went to our property and I showed Ruth our new house that we were building.  She thought it was a castle.

It was the third day much too soon.  Today I had to send Ruth home.  "I had a great time with you Ruth," I said. "I wish you could stay,"  "I promise to come and visit you again," said Ruth.  "I will listen for you," I said. Then she climbed into her space ship, and I pressed return.

From that day on I checked the furnace for Ruth every time I was downstairs.  I also kept my ears open for other thumps in the basement.  Who knows how many different creatures could appear down there.

The River

                                               The River

This story  is about Si . One day there was a big  hurricane . All of their roads turned into rivers. Everybody was so surprised  they blew up all of their cars  because they like to blow up things  and after they got boats. Si was rich so he got a fancy boat he loved it very much.

One day he was riding on the river and passed his brother Phil. "Hi, Phil" "Hi, Si" " How is it going ?" "Bad . I had to blow up my limo and corvette". Phil was sad that he blow up his limo and corvette  because he really liked cars.
One day it got really hot and a volcano was erupting .This made the river turn into lava. Si tried escaping by diving into the water that wasn't lava yet. He remembered someone said that there was a jewel that could turn into juice that would make him lava proof. He found that jewel that could make him lava proof. He got it and made it into juice and drank it and when the lava got to him he was ok.

Ellis Island

                                                     Ellis Island

Ellis Island was an inspection station where immigrants were inspected on their health and background before entering the United States.  Immigrants were asked 29 questions including name, occupation, and the amount of money that they carried. They had to have at least 18-20 dollars, so the government new that they had enough money to get started.

Ellis Island is located between New York City and New Jersey.  In 1998 the United States Supreme Court decided that most of the island should be part of New Jersey.  The island now has the Statue of Liberty National Monument and an immigration museum on it.

The first Immigration Inspection Station was a huge building that was built out of Georgia Pine.  It opened on January 1, 1892.  On the first day three big ships came carrying 700 immigrants total.

During the first year 450,000 people went through Ellis Island.  Within five years about 1.5 million people came through.  The exact number is unknown because there was a fire that destroyed all the records, dating back to 1855.

Not all people made it through Ellis Island.  Some were sent back because of chronic contagious disease, criminal background, or insanity.  Sometimes unskilled workers were sent home because they were "likely to become a public charge".  Immigrants with visible health problems would have to stay in hospital facilities on Ellis Island until they were healthy again.  About three thousand immigrants died on Ellis Island while they were in hospital facilities.

There is a lot of history from Ellis Island.  Millions of immigrants have been through Ellis Island, and some families were separated because of diseases, and other health problems.  About 100 million Americans today can trace their ancestors back to the first immigrants that came through Ellis Island.
