Crickets

We have been learning about insects  in Science.  This week we are focusing on crickets.  The crickets can make sounds with their feet.  You can hear them from a long ways away.  I enjoy learning about crickets.

Acid Rain

Acid Rain

 

        Acid rain is rainfall that is turned to acid because of pollution in the air. It can cause harm to our
environment, mostly to forests and lakes.  The main cause of acid rain is the burning of coal and other fossil fuels.  All the gasses join together and turn the atmospheric water into acids.

        The effects of acid rain are the lakes and streams can have acid in them that will kill the plants and animals , it can damage the trees at high elevations and it can accelerate  the decay of building materials and paints.  Including one of a kind buildings, statues, and sculptures.        

        Some things that we can do to help stop acid rain are....We can try to use cars less often. You could car pool, walk or ride bikes. Try to save electricity by turning off lights, or the T.V. and, using things that use less energy such as LED lights.

Japan

 In Social Studies we are learning about countries.  This week we will be learning about Japan.  We will read a book about the country and then we fill in our paper.  We have already done Brazil, Israel, Mexico and now we'll do Japan. We are learning about these different countries because America is made up of immigrants. It is interesting to learn about the countries that people have come from.

President's Day

I love school. We talked about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln last week. Their birthdays are in February and that's why we celebrate President's Day.

I also like to do math problems. I am good at addition and today I started subtraction. I did 75 problems! I love math.

Bees

 

This week in Science we are learning about bees. I'm excited to learn about them because I want to learn about their stingers, their wings, how they make honey, and other interesting facts.

 

We listened to a talk by Elder M. Russell Ballard about bees. His father owned a lot of bees and their hives. It was very interesting. A bee only makes 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in it's life, but every bee's small part is very important to the hive.

Endangered Animals

The Aye-Aye

 

        The Aye-Aye has dark brown or black hair.  It has a bushy tail that is bigger than it's body.  The Aye-Aye has big eyes, slender fingers, large ears, and long claws.

 

        The Aye-Aye lives in Madagascar.  They usually live in Rainforests.

 

        Aye-Aye's eat coconuts, bugs, and fruit.

 

        Aye- Ayes are endangered because they were thought to bring bad luck.  So if someone saw the Aye-Aye they would kill it on the spot.

 

 

The Bald Eagle

 

        The Bald Eagle is 31-37 inches tall.  They could have up to a 7 foot wing span. 

        The male Bald Eagle has a white head with a dark body and tail.  They have a curved yellow bill, and yellow feet.  The female Bald Eagle is the same but it is slightly larger. 

        The Bald Eagle eats fish, carrion, and birds. (Mostly ducks).

        The Bald Eagle's nest is usually on a massive platform or tree.  They return to the same nest every year.  They also add to their nests every year.

        The Bald Eagle is endangered because of DDT poisoning and illegal killing.  The Bald Eagle is now protected by the United States.

 

 

The Ocelot

 

        Ocelots are twice the size of an average house cat.  They have pointed fangs, and a sleek pretty coat.  They also have keen sight.

 

        Ocelots eat rabbits, rodents, iguanas, fish , and frogs.

       

        Ocelots live in South American Rainforests.  They also live in bush lands as far north as Texas.

 

        The Ocelot is endangered because their beautiful fur has made them a hunting target.

We are learning about ants for Science. I like learning about ants. It's fun and I've learned that ants can be helpful and they're hard workers. I get to learn about ants all week.
